Combined with new drug delivery mechanisms using pills and capsular endoscopy, we are making great strides to reduce invasive procedures and increasing ease of use. The balloon pill expands once inside the stomach to make the patient feel full, which leads to weight loss. One of the major problems tied to obesity is the signal connection between the stomach and the brain- sometimes the stomach ‘lies’ to the brain, i.e. that it is not full when it is in fact full. This balloon pill uses this same idea to once again trick the brain regarding the satiation of the patient- it would be certainly interesting to know more about the connection between the brain and hunger signals that it may receive. Oh, and by the way, one can potentially lose 1/3 of excess weight with this pill. Cool!
