Harder than a diamond? Q-carbon!

You can overcome the heat/energy barrier in a reaction by simply playing with the kinetics: by using a high power laser over a short interval of time, a very thin film of Q-carbon is created by a sharp temperature cycle. In fact, this allotrope is thought to be stronger than diamonds and even slightly ferromagnetic, which on the nanometer resolution that it’s in, makes a big difference! So we have the new strongest material that also contains tunable magnetic character- the possibilities for this discovery could range from drug delivery to structural material. And more!
